HFR: The story of a name
As HFR’s founder and owner, Heinrich F.R. Schaefer, used his initials – H.F.R. As he says, “I wanted people to know that when they deal with HFR, they are dealing with me. Our approach from day one Is personal commitment to the client, to the extent that, I won’t hesitate to take the truck wheel to deliver the load, if it’s needed. And I have, and I did. It was fun, but I learned what our client’s expectations were, and we still stick to these principles to this day – every day.”
Over time, the HFR has come to stand for ‘honourable’, ‘focused’, and ‘reliable’ – the company’s enduring ethos.
Our drivers are our business
Advanced controls, systems, and equipment are important, but the most critical link between your cargo and its destination is the driver.
Our drivers are not just drivers. They are our business.
That’s why we employ and train only the best drivers in the country. They understand the value of your cargo, and the trust of others in their hands. Your peace of mind is our top priority.
No driver is ever appointed on the grounds of simply a solid employment history. Only after a thorough initial evaluation, a strict three-week training period, and any number of real-life road trip evaluations, would we consider appointing a person as a driver at HFR Transport.
Training is key. We ensure the best drivers in the country through our own 40 seat, fully TETA accredited training facility. Our training covers all crucial information for those in the transport industry and students have the facilities at their disposal to gain hands-on, real-world experience. And when a person needs re-training? We give it! We believe great drivers can be trained, and we support our drivers through the training process.
Our team of mentors, assessors, facilitators, and moderators aim to offer the best training available. With our own in-office skills development facilitator, we are also able to assist other companies and members with their mandatory grants and yearly workplace skills’ plans submissions to the appropriate Services Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETA).
Our large fleet of refrigerated trailers can handle perishable cargo at any temperature between -25ºC and 20ºC. Since we specialise in transporting perishable, cold, and frozen goods like fish, meat, and dairy to destinations across Southern Africa, hygiene, quality, and utmost levels of professionalism are non-negotiable.We transport:
- Dry loads
- Wet loads
If it fits in a pallet or ships in a container, we can transport it for you! Don’t believe us? Have a look at some of the items we’ve transported over the years:
- Fish, meat, chicken
- Ice cream and cold drinks
- Tinned foods
- Clothing, shoes, and cosmetics
- Mail and packaging material
- Furniture and shelving

Our HFR Fleet keeps on truckin’
We only drive the best. Top brands that deliver top-notch service, consistently and reliably.
Our fleet of trucks and trailer units include Scania, Freightliner, Thermo King fridge units, and Carrier fridge units.
On track and in sight
All our trucks are equipped with the latest international navigation/communication systems. A solid working relationship with our service provider ensures that all our trucks can be reached and tracked 99% of the time. The tracking function is borderless and our trucks are visible, on-screen, all over South Africa. Our control room is staffed every hour of the day with, well-trained controllers and schedulers.
We have a dedicated team of logistics controllers who are in constant driver communication. Whenever possible, our drivers stick to main routes and toll roads to save time and cut down on truck wear-and-tear caused by substandard roads.
Because we keep close tabs on our trucks whereabouts and estimated times of arrival, customers can book in their loads as late as a day in advance. We do our utmost to ensure that a truck is available to pick up your cargo – if it isn’t, we’ll make a plan to accommodate your transport needs.
Our geographical tyreprint
Over the past two decades, we have established many long and successful relationships with our clients through uninterrupted deliveries, dedicated staff, and constant investment into people, equipment, and systems. HFR Transport covers Southern Africa with its fleet of reefers, criss-crossing the region with pre-booked loads on a daily basis throughout South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Swaziland, and Lesotho.
HFR serves the main centre around South Africa as well as a large number of regional hubs. We have a good relationship with cross border clearing personnel and will cut the red tape to get your cargo across the regions’ borders quickly and expediently giving you peace of mind.
Where can you find HFR depots?
Three strategically located depots – Boksburg (JHB), Cato Ridge, and Cape Town – ensure that our vehicles and drivers are served technically and functionally; providing rest, sustenance and that all important at-home environment. All our depots have full diesel facilities minimising downtime risk. We believe that an awake and alert driver is a great driver, therefore both Cato Ridge and Cape Town provide R&R facilities to our drivers.
BBBEE Certified – Level 3:
HFR is BBBEE Level 3 certified in the Road Freight sub-sector. As part of our goal for business sustainability in the local competitive environment, HFR’s BBBEE commitment aims to drive positive business sentiment, and increase economic activity within our sphere of business. Our score of 79.89% is a reflection of our approach to this goal.
Driving environmental sustainability
Remember the good bad-old-days when rusty trucks were all over the road with smoke belching from broken exhausts? Road construction and truck technology may have moved on, but no truck operator is ever absolved of its responsibility to society and the environment – at least that’s what we believe.
Almost none of our trucks ever stay with us for more than two years which helps us stay up-to-date with the latest available European and American truck and emissions technologies.
Our commitment to a cleaner environment starts with our drivers. With humanity’s thirst for fossil fuel consumption, we firmly believe that the less fuel we use on a trip, the better it is for the environment.
